Raising money for charity

Loreto College Swords Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Campaign is part of a broader education campaign using the MDG agenda to develop skills among young people around research, action, peer education and lobbying within a broader human rights agenda.

The work of Loreto College in the area of justice and peace is therefore very much shaped by the Millennium Goals. These are 8 goals set out by all the world’s leaders in 2000 to tackle issues such as poverty, education, Aids, child mortality etc. We all have a duty to ensure these goals are met by the year 2015. We are halfway there and many countries are already going back on commitments made.

To date the Justice and Peace group have undertaken locally based workshops exploring the MDG’s and have engaged in lobbying politicians in Dublin and New York! The handing over of a document drafted by various groups including our own students to the Irish Permanent Mission in New York was certainly a highlight for the school’s Justice and Peace group. Further trips are planned to Brussels, London and Stormont with the Aid agency 80:20 and Concern.

Loreto College Justice and Peace group meet every second Thursday and the members discuss further action, arrange for speakers to come in, do letter writing and review campaigns. Fundraising events are a very important part of our work during the year. We are inspired by the words of Nelson Mandela ‘ Overcoming poverty isn’t just an act of charity, it is an act of Justice.’ It is the duty of each of us to put justice into action.
